Bread Stall Volunteer Information

What is the bread stall?

The Bread Stall operates on Thursday afternoons from 2:45-3:30.

There is often a large amount of bread (and sometimes other food items) donated to the Community Larder by local supermarkets that are leftover after the larder closes at 1PM.

The Bread Stall serves two main purposes;
1) To serve the local community by giving free bread to the children and families of Southborough School, and anyone else who happens to be passing by. It has become a highlight of the week for many children who rush out of school to get a bread roll to snack on as they journey home.
2) To minimise food waste. Without the Bread Stall, a large amount of bread would sadly end up in the bin. Wonderfully, the Bread Stall has enabled us to give away hundreds (quite possibly thousands) of food products that otherwise would have had to of been thrown away.

How can I help?

We would love your help on the Bread Stall! Here is a brief description of some of the ways you might be able to get involved…

Setting up and tidying up

This involves carrying a few chairs, the boxes of bread, and other items out to the Broomhill Park Road Gate from the Church Hall before handing out bread to customers. A trolley will be available if required.

These items will then need to be brought back inside when you have finished.

Handing out bread to parents and children

Once everything is set up, team members would be expected to hand out bread and any other food items to customers.

We regularly have customers of all ages - many being children. So, it is important that team members understand the importance of interacting with customers in a friendly and appropriate manner and that they will enjoy having conversations with members of the public.

Team members will need to have a basic understanding of food hygiene. It is a requirement that gloves are worn when unpackaged food is being handled.

waste disposal

Any leftover bread will need to be disposed of using the church bins.

Empty boxes will need to be broken up and disposed of using the church bins.
